A Statement on Today's Immigration Enforcement Actions in Ventura County

We are heartbroken, pained, and deeply troubled by today’s immigration enforcement actions targeting farmworkers at multiple packing houses and farms throughout Oxnard and unincorporated Ventura County.

Farmworkers are the backbone of Ventura County’s $2 billion agricultural industry. They are not only essential workers, but they are our neighbors, friends, and members of our community who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Regardless of political affiliation, every one of us benefits from the labor of farmworkers every time we sit down to eat.

While we believe that individuals who commit violent crimes should be held accountable, what we are witnessing today is something very different. It is unnecessary for ICE to carry out enforcement actions in a way that causes terror and fear among ordinary, hard-working immigrants and their families. This is not the solution, and it only deepens intergenerational trauma.

The answer lies in comprehensive immigration reform. It has been nearly 40 years since meaningful reform was passed, and in that time, millions of hardworking individuals have continued to live in limbo, contributing to our country while being denied basic dignity and security. We urge Congress to come together to finally fix our broken immigration system.

Friends of Fieldworkers remains steadfast in our commitment to supporting, celebrating, and advocating for farmworker families. In response to today’s immigration enforcement actions, we have created a direct fundraiser, through our Emergency Fund Program, to provide direct financial assistance to those affected. These funds will help cover lost wages and offer support to families experiencing trauma and hardship due to today’s ICE operations.
